cityWell looks deceiving. Behind a non-descript door on an industrial block in Gowanus, Brooklyn, lies a holistic haven. Massage therapist Liz Tortolani wanted to bring a boutique feel to wellness. Liz performs massages inside, where there's also a shower and steam room. Outside an urban sanctuary takes shape. Architect Deborah Mariotti helped transform the cozy 450-square-foot indoor space.

Like a rehabbed starlet, much-maligned Brooklyn nabe Gowanus has turned its rep around. It’s welcomed an influx of restaurants (Dinosaur BBQ), bakeries (Four & Twenty Blackbirds) and even a shuffleboard club (Royal Palms), and the makeover train (or should we say barge?) is rolling full steam ahead.
